Optometry
Optometry is a health care profession which deals with the examination, diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases and disorders of the visual system. One can also define it as the science of eye equipment (including lenses and spectacles) which is imbued with the idea of improving the vision of the human eye and remove all kinds of obstacles of sight which an individual may experience.
Optometry is one of the top ten income-earning professions in the country today - a profession offering you regular hours, flexibility in the type of practice, and a myriad choices in geographic location. If you have the desire, the demonstrated academic skills, and a commitment to helping others, envision a career in optometry. If you are looking for a dynamic and challenging career, which allows you to help people, achieve personal growth, community respect, job flexibility and financial success and offers virtually unlimited opportunities, you can find it in the profession of optometry.
Today, problem of vision is common among people of all ages in India. Advancement in scientific technology and diagnostic methods has made the profession of optometry one of the best career options. Also, the ability to choose your type of practice, attractive compensation, flexible hours, and status within health care are a few reasons why more individuals choose optometry as their best profession.
Courses & Eligibility
An aspirant of optometry can pursue Diploma or B.Sc course in Optometry at the initial level. For these programs one must have passed 10+2 Science with Physics, Chemistry, English and Biology or Mathematics. Selection criteria are different in different institutes. Some conduct entrance examination whiles others select candidates on the basis of merit.
One can also pursue post-graduate diploma in Optometry. The minimum eligibility for this course is a graduate in any discipline. However, preference is given to science graduates and sponsored candidates.
For Master’s and M.Phil programs in optometry, one should have completed bachelors degree and master’s degree in optometry respectively.
Career Prospects
The scope for optometric practice in India and abroad is great and unlimited. Optometrists practice individually, in group practices with other eye care professionals, and work in teaching and research settings.
An optometrist has the following career opportunities:
* Can start his or her own eye clinic, Optical shop, lens manufacturing unit, etc.
* Can work for eye testing, Contact lenses, squint exercises, etc.
* Can work with Optician shops, eye doctors, and Contact Lens and Ophthalmic lens industry, hospital eye departments, etc.
* Can get jobs with Optician shops and hospitals in India and abroad.
* Can take up teaching Optometry as a career with schools of Optometry.
The present scope of optometry practice is far more than the historic determination of the refractive state of the eyes and the prescribing and dispensing of glasses.
Today the practice of Optometry also includes the detection of ocular and related systemic diseases, the fitting of Contact Lenses and Low Vision Aids. It extends to public health-vision screening in school and industry - vision problems associated with driving and flying. It involves Optometric counseling of patients with partial sight and hereditary vision defects.
Usually the earnings of an optometrists depend on the organization or the field in which he/she is working. In the first one or two years of practice, an optometrist’s income usually averages Rs.1.2 – 1.4 lakhs per annum. However in private practice the earnings are more as compared to fixed salaried jobs in hospitals/health centres.
